Spice Girls

También esto pasará

The Spice Girls appear in the novel as a brief pop-cultural reference rather than as participants in the plot. The narrator invokes the group to explain Guillem’s teasing nickname for Sofía, using its posh member as a recognizable shorthand for the quality he is suggesting.

Reference in the Scene

Guillem calls Sofía Posh while asking her to pass him a bottle to put in the freezer, teasing her for being so upset. When Sofía asks what he means, the narrator explains that Posh refers to the posh Spice Girl. The exchange makes the group’s name the key to understanding the joke.

Comic Effect

Sofía laughs at the explanation, then protests that she is not posh at all. The allusion therefore supplies a playful label that she immediately rejects; the evidence presents the Spice Girls through this brief joke, without developing them as characters or a broader subject.
